Around the world, soccer is called “the Beautiful Game.” When most people say this, they are generally referring to the rules, regulations, and player abilities that govern the sport. The simplest description is 11 athletes on two teams running and kicking a ball (no hands allowed!) for 90 minutes. Whoever scores the most goals wins. Obviously, though, there’s more to it than that. The power, the speed, the reflexes, the stamina, the mental geometry, and the teamwork it takes to play this game is simply astounding. It’s no wonder professional soccer phenom, Pelé, liked to talk about his “life in the Beautiful Game.”
But there is another less obvious consideration that makes soccer beautiful. It’s the fandom. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. More than any other game, event, or activity it is soccer that unites people. The Beautiful Game brings fans together from diverse countries, cultures, religions, and economic backgrounds.
So, what could possibly make soccer even better?
How about playing for a beautiful cause?
In just a few weeks, Plentiful Harvest will bring soccer fans together to do just that. On June 25th, we are going to hold our second annual soccer tournament to raise funds for young entrepreneurs in Uganda. Our goal is to raise $3,500. All funds will go directly to helping small business startups in this economically challenged country. Those businesses in turn seek to honor Jesus Christ and bring about social and economic change in their communities.
It’s a big goal, but it’s absolutely doable. This is soccer after all. It’s the beautiful game, and in the beautiful game, you play to win. We’re counting on fans of the sport to come together and have fun for this beautiful cause.
Last year’s tournament brought teams from as far away as Columbia, SC. Eight teams with eight players each matched up and raised $2,400 for Plentiful Harvest. Tucanes Fast won first place; The Young Pirates took second. All funds earned from the tournament went directly to helping the small businesses and people we are supporting in Uganda.
This year’s soccer tournament will be held at Lafayette Christian School in LaGrange, GA on Saturday, June 25th, 2022. If you would like to sign up to play, you can register here. Snacks and refreshments will available in the concession stand. For more information, you can call Angelina at 803-973-9776 or Timothy at 803-451-1535. Both will be happy to help. So come on out and support us. Even if you don’t play, you can still enjoy watching the matches.
This is soccer, after all. It’s called the Beautiful Game for a reason.
